How To Troubleshoot Your WordPress Website

If your site has just started acting up, don’t stress, it’s nothing you’ve done wrong!
It can be solved quickly and easily by following our troubleshooting steps below.

Step 1. Check for Available Updates

The most common cause of issues are from outdated software and in most cases you’ll find updating resolves any problems you’re experience instantly!

Check if you have any updates available (WordPress, Genesis, Themes, Plugins) by navigating to Dashboard > Updates > Select All > Update

Step 2. Check the Framework Version

If you’re using the Genesis Framework

Navigate to Appearance > Themes

Is there a update notification for Genesis? If so update now.

If not, click “Genesis” and see what version you have. If your version installed is 2.4.1 or lower, this is most likely the cause of the issue. To resolve this, just update to the latest version of Genesis by re-download genesis here and reinstall it following these instructions.

If you’re using the Divi Framework

Navigate to Appearance > Themes

Is there a update notification for Divi? If so update now.

Step 3. Check for Plugin Conflicts

Plugins add a lot of additional features and functionality and can sometimes cause unexpected issues.

First, make sure all plugins are updated to their latest version by navigating to Dashboard > Updates > Select All > Update

If that doesn’t fix the problem, it’s worth deactivating all plugins and seeing if that resolves the issue. If it does, it means the issue is a plugin conflict! Then re-activate each plugin one by one testing which is the affected plugin.

Once you know which plugin was causing problems, I’d recommend deactivating or deleting the plugin and finding a substitute plugin by doing a quick Google search “plugin name alternatives”

Step 4. Reinstall WordPress

WordPress, like any software, has the ability to break. This can be caused by plugins not working properly, file corruption, database problems, or many other problems.

First, create a backup of your site by installing and activating the plugin UpdraftPlus and follow the prompts to create a backup.

Next, navigate to Dashboard > Update

You will see the notice “You have the latest version of WordPress. If you need to re-install the latest version, you can do so here”

Click “Reinstall Now”

Clear your browsers cache, or view your site on another device to see if that solved the problem.

Step 5. Still Experiencing Problems?

The troubleshooting steps above should fix the most common WordPress errors, so if you haven’t already, I’d recommend trying them.

WordPress is a open-source community software and if your site issue still exists, you can post your topic in the WordPress Support forums.  You can ask for help by posting your topic or do a search on the error message, or problem, in the forum and see if someone else has had the same issue that’s been solved. Chances are you aren’t the only one and the solution is just waiting for you to find it.

I test my themes extensively and try my very best to catch any and all bugs before I release a new theme. If you catch something that’s not working properly and you’ve followed the troubleshooting steps above; installed all available updates and deactivated all plugins and the problem still persists, please let me know.
